Are you sure you have your folder options set right? In your folder go to tools>folder options>view. In there are a bunch of boxes that can be checked or unchecked. UNCHECK the box that says something about hiding extensions for known file types. Then apply & when you try to rename a file it will have the m4a at the end instead of just a name. Make sure you’re using a duplicate file or you will mess up the original!

Worked like a charm in iTunes 8 – after I created the .m4r is went automatically to Ringtones under Library.

    I have:
    OS V10.5.6
    iTunes 8
    .wav files
Is there a solution to add them as ringtones?

Argh. I can’t find the “Import Using” file in my “Advanced” settings on my PC. Anyone know how to make sure it’s set to “import using AAC Encoder”???

use garage band, drag the mp3 file into garage band then export to itunes as ringtone under the share tab. alot easier if you have garage band

I think it’s not possible to do it anymore because mines is doing the same thing. It doesn’t show up at all in itunes. Curse you Steve Jobs!

ive got itunes 8.1.1.10 which is the latest update you can get i think and it still works.
my problem was the ring tones i was creating were longer than 30 seconds. as soon as i made ones less than 30 seconds they started showing up on my phone straight away.

you’ll either have to just add ‘.m4r’ onto the end or you’ll have to change the folder settings in vista so that file extenstions appear and you can change it from m4a to m4r.
